Topic: Employee Management

Reference: Emerson,Brian and Loehr, Anne. “When to Coach and When Not to Coach.” AmericanManagement Association: Executivematters, September 2009.

In dealing with struggling employees it sometimes difficultto determine how to help them. Is the problem a problem with skill development(training) or attitude (coaching). For attitude and confidence type problems, one tool that is fast on the rise is to use executive coaching to help anemployee work past certain limitations and find a way to add value to anorganization. The coaching is designed to help the person find the road toself-discovery and identify the things that may be holding them back. If acoach can identify these things then a program can be developed to assist theemployee.  The problem is that mostemployee issues are a combination of a lack of skill and attitude. What then isthe best process to use to know when to apply a coaching solution? In thereferenced article the commentators have developed a series of questions to askin order to make the determination. The questions include the following: “(a)Does the employee have the skills and abilities to effectively deal withoutside factors in order to be successful? Does the employee have difficultydealing effectively with the outside factors despite having the skills? “ Ifthe answer to the latter question is no then the commentators advocate using acoaching solution. The reason is that you can’t coach over an inherent skillissue or core inability to do a job. However, you can effectively use coachingwhere confidence, chutzpah or frustration is at the core of the matter. “Thetrick for managers is to be able to look at a situation and then use the rightmix of teaching and coaching that is required to get employees what they need.”I like this model and the framework that is used to deploy the right solution. It looks to be an easy and effective way to help employees get the rightsolutions to their problems. Ultimately, that is the winning advantage. Let meknow your thoughts on the best way to deploy coaching solutions.
