Tuesday, September 29, 2009 Topic: Employee Management Reference: Tratar, Chris. “Recruiting by Relationship to Fill the Candidate Pipeline.”Workforce Management, September 2009. S5. Given the meltdown in the economy and the lack of business activity in many sectors, it is surprising how difficult it is to source high quality candidates for critical positions. Quality recruiting continues to be a challenge. Perhaps not as much of a challenge as it was 4 years ago, but it remains a challenge. Many continue to rely on job boards, newspapers, and personal connections to find people. However, many people have stopped looking or have gone dark in their passive job searching. Relying strictly on personal networks may yield little value in this market. Specialist and search professionals are advocating smart sourcing as the way to combat this problem. The same requires the smart utilization of resources across the employment spectrum. In the referenced article the commentator discusses several alternatives to address recruitment challenges including smart use of social networks, candidate resource management tools, and attractive job postings. “With a tech-savvy employment brand, an automated process, and online connections to social networks, your organization can gain significant advantages.” This is really good advice; much of which I have used to fill positions in different departments. For example, I have found that relationship sourcing is really good for technology specific positions, but not so effective for administrative and finance positions. With those positions I have enjoyed better sourcing from the job boards and advertisements. Senior level positions vary and all sources should be consulted to maximize your candidate pools. The real story here is old habits die hard, but relying only on personal networks to fill positions is no longer advisable. That is something to consider in building social networking into your hiring strategy and moving beyond the bounds of your own relationships. Let me know how you are dealing with this challenge in your organization.
